Artist and filmmaker with a degree in Film from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, with lengthy experience in the cultural scene of his native city Recife. He has worked sporadically as a scriptwriter and film producer. He works primarily with film, which he explores aesthetically and photographically, providing a razor-sharp take on the Brazilian sociocultural reality, highlighting the vicissitudes of culture in Northeast Brazil. Going from local to global, he builds universal readings of human nature, with attention to the nuances of sociocultural and geographical contexts. Throughout his career, which he began in the 1990s, Gomes has written and directed several films. They are: Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus (2005); Viajo Porque Preciso, Volto Porque Te Amo (2009); Era Uma Vez Eu, Verônica (2012); and others. He has partnered intellectually and artistically with Karim Aïnouz for many of his films. Marcelo Gomes has also co-directed, with the artist Cao Guimarães, the feature film Homem das Multidões (2013), which premiered at the 640 Berlinale in Berlin, Germany (2014). The piece is a clear depiction of his aesthetical concerns with photography and experimentation, which he shares with Guimarães himself and the director of photography Ivo Lopes Araújo. He is a staple at the national and international film festival and art exhibition scenes, and has won prizes occasionally. Currently, he lives and works in São Paulo, but is regularly featured in the audiovisual art scene of his native city.
