This piece is part of the “Ao Vivo” (Live) research project, which began in 2002 and is an ongoing process within the artist’s practice. Here, a white triangular flag bearing the inscription “Ao Vivo” is raised on top of the Copan building, a landmark of modernist architecture in downtown São Paulo. In this solemn situation, a lone musician plays a melody on a trumpet that brings to mind historical events, homages and celebrations, as another character, also in a white uniform, puts up the flag. As the artist himself put it, the territorial demarcation at play here accentuates the place’s visibility and re-signifies its historical condition. Lenhardt reaches for the core of the construction of values and customs that constitute tradition, pointing to the mechanisms that originate them. The devices of mass communication – such as live TV broadcasts – function as fundamental apparatuses for the effectiveness of these inventions.
