A pair of eyes stand out against a smooth surface in the trophy-sculpture built by Efrain de Almeida for the 19th Festival. The 12 pieces were molded and cast from a wooden sculpture and then hand-painted by the artist. Sculpted in bas-relief, the eyes look upward, as if gazing at something up high. They are a reference to Saint Lucy, the Christian martyr and protector of the eyes and eyesight, and to the importance of this faculty to artistic activity. They also evoke the Festival’s name: the word video comes from the Latin video, “I see.”
