Bare Life Study #1 is a performance done in 2005, for the occasion of the 15th Festival. The action’s leitmotif is the scandalous photographs that revealed the tortures inflicted by the U.S. army upon war prisoners in Abu Ghraib, 2004, in the secret prisons of Bagram in Afghanistan, and at the Naval Base of Guantanamo, Cuba. Those photographs highlight the use of the femininity as a control weapon and humiliation. The re-creation of abuses can be seen on the young detainees’ submission, who accept their commander’s voice without hesitating, kneeling down and ‘cleaning up’ with toothbrushes the street facing the United States Consulate, in São Paulo. The work was commissioned by Associação Cultural Videobrasil.
