During an interview on occasion of his appearance in the 13th Festival competitive show, Cao Guimarães discusses his pieces Sopro and Word World. Both were made in Super 8 and are abstract to a degree. In the artist’s own words, Sopro - inventário das pequenas mortes is sort of like a “mini-drama of form,” portraying a bubble which never bursts. The piece addresses the notion of suspension, the passage from one state to another. Word World features two ants which are attracted by honey and take the printed words into their dwellings, in a bid to reveal the incommunicability between beings. The artist also discusses his own career and his fine arts background. Although he works with various media – cinema, photography, installation –, this is his first appearance at a video festival. Guimarães says image has become somewhat depleted a result of people being bombarded with it in the contemporary world; to him, reality has come to be thought of as an image. Regarding identity and globalization, he expresses a certain fear of the world’s becoming mechanical – hence his penchant for chance, error, and contingency.
