The artist from the state of Santa Catarina discusses his Chão Comum piece, featured in thet Southern Panoramas show during the 18th Festival. He describes the creative process for the video, in which he appropriated footage of a rocket launch in 1969. The public domain broadcast is freely available on the internet. Using minor manipulations, Romagnani attempts to make the reference of this image in motion disappear. According to him, he became interested upon realizing that although it was the outcome of a major research effort, the rocket launch is approached from the perspective of the waste it left behind. Thus, he addresses the ruins left by the race among individuals much more than the great achievements of mankind. “It is a ruin of the collective,” he says. His attention was also captured by the close connection between the video, whose aim was to analyze the procedures scientifically, and video art, both in terms of the static camera and the extended time.
