Argentina’s Sebastián Diaz Morales elaborates on his Lucharemos Hasta Anular la Ley (2004), a video shown for the first time by Associação Cultural Videobrasil at the 15th Festival (2005) and selected by the curator of Unerasable Memories – a historic look at the videobrasil collection. The piece is based on footage from a demonstration in front of the Buenos Aires City Hall. Morales explains that a group was protesting against a bill being drafted inside the building to regulate the presence of prostitutes, transvestites and street vendors in the city of Buenos Aires. To the artist, violent popular reaction is a resource of the powerless against tyranny, symbolized by the imposing colonial building they ransack. Diaz Morales comments on the conceptual aspects of his work, which often makes considerations about the representation of reality. The artist mentions how interferences on the images in Lucharemos Hasta Anular la Ley, which go so far as to resemble newspaper photographs or animation, strip them of temporality. The near-fictional tone that Morales shoots for is reinforced by narrative constructs, like the character of the priest and the progression leading up to the final scene.
