Signs, Sights and Sounds

As the Singapore film community develops, so does a voice for the generation that is able to express themselves through the medium of film and video. The ideas of home, memory, navigation and oppression are explored in these works. Using signs, sights and sounds through a visual landscape of images to express a deeper desire to be heard and seen, the films capture a sense of loss and loneliness of a generation seduced and pursued by a material consciousness that ends up in an explosion of unfiltered thoughts. This is a generation dealing with the material demands of society and the struggle of maintaining one’s true self — which sometimes means trying to hold on to the past. What is translated in these works is a fresh Singapore voice, reflecting different visual styles. It is hard to say what exactly is a Singaporean film or video because it is a conundrum even for its practitioners. It’s all the confusion, desperation and exasperation rolled into a journey. And that journey is the voice we see today.
