The artist as citizen is the theme of the edition opening on 11.8

Benin’s cultural scene is intensely vibrant, and that includes the visual arts. Reflecting said vitality, the country will have its first Biennale Benin - Inventing the World: The Artist as Citizen, which had a pilot edition in 2010 on occasion of the country’s 50th independence anniversary. On that note, Abdellah Karroum, one of the event’s artistic directors, claims that based on “the observation of contemporary forms of expression, both in the African continent and elsewhere, the Biennale Benin 2012 questions the notion of the artist as active and social citizen, and the dimensions of aesthetics.”

The biennale will take place simultaneously in four cities of Benin - Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Ouidah, and Abomey. In addition to the art shows, there will be workshops and research work, leading to the publication of a catalogue and four magazines, with members of the board of curators collaborating with guest authors and artists, and a mobile radio covering the entire Biennale. In addition to Karroum, the event is directed by Didier Houénoudé and Stephan Köhler, with curatorial consulting from Georges Adéagbo, Yuki Asai (Japan) and Ricardo Sardenberg (Brazil). Among the selected artists are two participants of the International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil, Carla Zaccagnini (Brazil) and Dor Guez (Isreal).
