“(R)evoluções culturais” [Cultural (R)evolutions], given by Rodrigo Maltez Novaes, explores the ideas and the legacy of the Czech-Brazilian philosopher

During the month of July, the researcher Rodrigo Maltez Novaes will coordinate a course at Galpão VB about one of the main philosophers of the 20th century, the Czech-Brazilian Vilém Flusser (1920–1991). Known as a media theorist, Flusser spent a large part of his life in São Paulo, to where he migrated with his family taking refuge from World War II.

The course will consist of four meetings, always on Wednesdays, with group readings of classes conducted by the philosopher in 1986 at the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA-USP). According to Rodrigo Maltez Novaes—one of the leading specialists in Flusser’s work and the curator of the next issue of Cadernos Sesc_Videobrasil, also dedicated to the philosopher—, these readings intend to critically approach the cultural and technological changes we experience and that Flusser was a pioneer in identifying.

“We are in the eye of the storm,” says Novaes. “We still can’t look objectively at the recent evolution in mass media, which swallowed us and has been rippling with radical changes in the fields of politics, science and art.” To him, the moment is ripe for reflection on the present situation and the uncertain future awaiting us.

To participate in the course, no previous knowledge of Vilém Flusser’s work is necessary. See further details below.
