One of the guest artists for the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil | Southern Panoramas, Sônia Gomes comments on the creative process leading up to her piece Deslocar, featured at Sesc Pompeia’s Galpão area during the Southern Panoramas | Guest Artists exhibit. The installation amalgamates sculptures and objects created by the artist between 2000 and 2015.
Gomes explains that second-hand clothes and fabric are her main raw materials. Usually donated to the artist, the materials carry a sentimental value imparted by their previous owners. "I feel responsible for each piece of material, each piece of cloth I get. (…) Once the work is done, the story will be mine; it will be a different story altogether. A person who sees my work will find a bit of their own story in it. I guess my work is this construct of stories, of life and time."
