The work is a dual portrait: on one side, a soldier balances his machine gun in the palm of one hand, while on the other, a performer teeters on a crutch. The work remains open to various different readings, which could involve such concepts as sustenance, gravity, and motor coordination, but which may also evoke human and cultural issues as suggested by the identities of the protagonists. As in all of the artist’s work, gestures and images surge in enigmatic, captivating forms that skirt the edges of performances.
