A member of the 18th Festival jury, the Spanish critic and curator discusses the diversity of artworks shown and the mix of artworks that deal with image in motion and other media. According to him, the various media featured add to the multiplicity of origins and languages of participating artists. Endowing this eclectic set with a meaning is the biggest challenge facing the jury, he says. To him, most of the artists are interested in looking out at the world and speaking to it, instead of turning inward to the art field. Regarding the Brazilian participants, he highlights race and urbanity as major issues. He also speaks of how difficult it was to set the award criteria, and notes that he regards the prizes as ways to grant benefits to the artists, based on the extent to which they could take advantage from said prizes.
