Paulo Nazareth, winner of the Arquetopia_Videobrasil residency, talks about the common procedure used in his videos L’Arbre D’Oublier, Cine África, Cine Brasil and Ipê Amarelo, in which he walks backwards, circling trees, paying reference to the Tree of Forgetfulness ritual, around which men were obliged to walk seven times in order to erase the memory of their past before being sent to the Americas as slaves. The artist comments on how, while walking around the tree, he actually seeks to recover this memory, which keeps being constantly deleted and smeared.
