4 pm: Public Programs — Renegade Histories: Memories of Indigenous and African Descent + Batendo Amalá, performance by Ayrson Heráclito

featuring: Agustín Pérez Rubio, Rosângela Rennó, Ayrson Heráclito and Vincent Carelli

The memories brought by slaves from Africa and the traditional indigenous cultures, all key components in Latin America’s formative discourse, are being erased from the continent’s history. This issue is addressed in the works of Rosângela Rennó, Ayrson Heráclito, and Vincent Carelli featured in the exhibition. Through the prism of their own experiences, oeuvres, and practices, the artists and the curator will discuss how invisibility and ostracization are imposed upon populations of African and indigenous descent, in history and art discourses. Heráclito will also present a ritualistic performance, loosely inspired by original religions from Senegal and Bahia.
