The seminar, organized by the Goethe Institut, was delivered by the journalist and videomaker Hartmut Horst, originally from Berlin and one of the managers of the Median Operative production company. Horst discussed video-based social work schemes, covering technical aspects of production, equipment, filming, editing and distributing, and touching on the work of several companies, among them Medien Operative.

The seminar opened with a short retrospective of the video movement in Germany in 1979 and 1980, the forming of independent groups, and symposia and festivals held in the country. Next, Horst outlined and discussed video-based social and cultural work schemes, including technical aspects of production, equipment, filming, editing and distribution.

Medien Operative is a self-regulated organization whose goal is to make video accessible to the public involved in sociopolitical activities, through courses, equipment loans, exhibitions, productions and guidance. The German production company is also part of this year’s International Exhibition, which features works by Horst.
