Galeria Nara Roesler shows photographies and videos

Curated by Solange Farkas, the Passatempo exhibition presents photos and videos by Cao Guimarães, a reference in the Brazilian production that intertwines film and visual arts. Over four series, Gambiarras, Paquerinhas, Limbo and Otto, the selection draws a kind of inventory of the obsessions that underlie the Cao Guimarães' work. The symbolic element that guides the curatorship is water, which is taken as a symbol of birth and also associated with the way that human figure appears in an embryonic state in the images of the artist.

Otto, a highlight of the exhibition, is an new video that reveals the emergence of life through the details of a pregnancy - as in other pieces, there is a leading role for the character that is only hinted. Although one can see a human figure clearly, it is about another one, hidden, that the work addresses a fascinated gaze. The work, which Cao describes as "a love movie", has his son's name.

Cao Guimarães has a unique trajectory for the way his work moved from major film festivals - such as Cannes, Locarno and Sundance - to events like the São Paulo Biennial, where he participated twice, besides being present in collections such as Tate Modern, MoMA and Guggenheim Museum. According to the curator of Passatempo, the language of Guimarães, which can be described as an expanded audiovisual, reveals that, for him, "the cinema is an art that is still in the cradle." The show is held by Galeria Nara Roesler, Sao Paulo, from July 22 to August 25.
