The Videobrasil Collection will be discussed in one of the panels at the Simpósio Internacional Futuros Possíveis (Possible Futures International Symposium), to be promoted by the USP, Fapesp and Capes from October 1st to 5th. Ana Pato, the executive director at Videobrasil, will give a talk on the first day of the meeting. The event will discuss the preservation of artistic and cultural heritage, and will be attended by international specialists in digital art file conservation and collection digitization.

According to Ana, “the increasingly frequent recurrence of ephemeral artwork created through digital processes has led to small collections being established which are kept outside of museological institutions.” Thus, she will stress the importance of efforts such as that of Videobrasil, which emerged in the 1980s and has dedicated itself to preserving documents and video works since the 1990s. Pato will also address the lack of procedures for transcribing, translating, and storing contemporary art documents in digital archives, and the pressing need for managing residual documentation from contemporary art shows. Ana Pato, a cultural manager and executive director for Videobrasil, holds a master’s in Visual Arts from the Santa Marcelina School (2011) and a specialization in culture administration from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (1996). She is the author of the book Literatura expandida: o arquivo e a citação na obra de Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (Expanded literature: the archive and the quote in the oeuvre of Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster), due to be released in December 2012.

The Possible Futures Symposium combines discussions on digital artwork preservation methodologies and analyses of different formats and curating information. Participants will include Daniela Kutschat, Renata Motta, Lucas Bambozzi, Paula Alzugaray, Gilbertto Prado, and international guests.
