In Barcelona, the Palestinian artist’s first retrospective show

La casa fantasmal is the first retrospective show of Palestinian artist Ahlam Shibli. Starting on February 6, Barcelona’s MACBA will feature nine photographic series in a co-production with Paris’s Jeu de Paume and Porto’s Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art. Produced by Shibli in the last decade from investigative work involving conversations and on-site research, the works include subtitles linking each photo to a given time and place.

Using documentary-like aesthetics, Ahlam Shibli’s work describes contradictory implications of the notion of home – it tackles both homelessness and the struggle with it, as well as the restrictions imposed by repressive policies. The occupied territories of Palestine, the memorials to French anti-Nazi resistance, the bodies of lesbian women, gay men, bisexuals and transsexuals in Eastern societies, and the communities of children growing up in Polish foster homes are some of these “spaces.”

Death, her latest series, which she conceived especially for the show, is also featured. In it Shibli addresses the Palestinian society’s attempts at keeping alive the memories of those who lost their lives to Israeli occupation. The pictures include portraits, posters, and graves painted onto the street as a means of resistance against expansionist policies.
