Program curated by Solange Farkas revisits Videobrasil’s collection to pinpoint intersections between the contemporary art scene and the organization’s history, in the light of its thirty years

Solange Farkas, the director and general curator for Associação Videobrasil, is taking the show 30 Years of Videobrasil to Atlanta, USA. Curated by Farkas herself, the show features work by video artists such as Eder Santos, Sandra Kogut, Cao Guimarães, Tatiana Blass and Marcia Vaitsman (Atlanta resident), among others, and will run from February 19 to 21 at the Georgia State University.

The program was designed to revisit Videobrasil’s collection of audiovisual works in order to pinpoint intersections between the contemporary art scene and the organization’s history, in the light of its thirty years. The program is divided into three distinct curated sections, equivalent to the three major phases in the history of Videobrasil.

Axis 1: 1983 to 1989
The initial phase, lasting from 1983 to 1989, was marked by a policy of dissemination, construction, and stabilization of the electronic medium in Brazil, which had just exited a two-decade period of military dictatorship regime.

Axis 2:  1990 to 1998
The second phase, lasting from 1990 to 1998, saw the consolidation and legitimization of electronic art within the international art scene. During this period, the festival went biennial, and became established as a platform for exchange among artists, scholars, and curators.

Axis 3: 2001 until this day
From 2001 on, the festival entered its third and ongoing phase. Here, it affirms its international projection, bases its curatorial focus on art from the geopolitical South of the world, and embraces wildly diverse mediums and artistic languages.
