The Moroccan filmmaker and visual artist reflects on nomadism and social belonging in her work

In 2007, Bouchra Khalili was invited to present two video programs at the Bahia Museum of Modern Art, as a part of the 16th Festival program. In a statement to Channel VB, she compares the atmospheres of Morocco and Brazil, especially that of the state of Bahia. According to her, the two countries share many features, in particular the way they deal with heterogeneity and syncretism.

Boasting a body of work that reflects on nomadism and social belonging, the Moroccan filmmaker and visual artist Bouchra Khalili employs these notions as the foundation to her own productions, which she describes as being “in between cinema and contemporary art, fiction and documentary.” Khalili was one of five winning artists of the current edition of the Art Dubai Fair, and has appeared in four editions of the Festival (from the 14th to the 17th editions).

Her works have been shown at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), the “Mapping Subjectivity” show at the MoMA (New York, 2011), the 18th Sydney Biennial (2012), the 10th Sharjah Biennial (United Arab Emirates, 2011); Liverpool Biennial (United Kingdom, 2010); The Studio Museum (New York, USA, 2010); The Museum of Contemporary Art (Detroit, USA, 2010); Gallery 44 (Toronto, Canada, 2010); and Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain , 2009), among other shows and venues.
