Diego Matos — assistant-curator of the 18th Festival — and David Sperling – Professor at the Architecture and Urbanism Institute of the University of Sao Paulo – talk to the public during the opening of 18th Festival On Tour — São Carlos exhibition. The event took place on May 6, at Sesc São Carlos.
Each of them, under their own perspectives, consider about the function of the art as a catalyzer of new visions about the individual and about the re-signification of the urban space. Sperling points out to the necessity of “see what is not seen – from areas considered “empties” by the system, one should make narratives arise which would fill these contexts, changing the way we see these places.” Matos, in his turn, highlights the event’s situation in the international art scene, which operates throughout “distinctive regards about one distinctive reality, which is the reality of this geopolitical south – our curatorial focus – absorbing discourses that are out of the traditional segment of art history.” Present at the event, the founder of the Associação Cultural Videobrasil and chief curator of the Festival, Solange Farkas, reaffirms this characteristic, when she says “the regard towards us and our place, is the Videobrasil’s place in the context of the arts.
David Sperling (São Paulo, Brazil) is architect, Professor Doctor of the Architecture and Urbanism Institute of the University of Sao Paulo, Sao Carlos Campus and researcher of the Núcleo de Estudos das Espacialidades Contemporâneas.
Diego Matos (Fortaleza, Brazil, 1979) is architect and curator, holder of a PhD. degree at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo. He was the assistant curator of the 18th Festival of Contemporary Art Sesc_Videobrasil. And now he is the Archive and Research Coordinator at the Associacão Cultural Videobrasil.
