Associação Cultural Videobrasil

On July 11 (Saturday), from 7pm, artworks from Videobrasil Collection are on display in Goethe-Institut São Paulo's auditorium. Curated by Bernardo de Souza, a member of the Curatorial Committee of the 19^th Festival, the video program Crossings and passages: the unequal accumulation of time brings together recent works by Cinthia Marcelle, Karim Aïnouz and Marcelo Gomes, and Virginia de Medeiros. The exhibition is part of Artemovendo project, made possible by the Goethe-Institut in partnership with Videobrasil on July 10 and 11, which features a selection of video works with emphasis on Germany, Brazil and Mexico. Bernardo de Souza, also responsible for the video program Artemovendo - A alma oculta do inanimado [Artemovendo: The hidden soul of the inanimate], show during the first day of exhibition, participates in conversations with the public in both dates.

Sergio e Simone (2010), by Virginia de Medeiros, deals with the contrasts of Salvador’s urban settings as it portrays an individual with two identities: Simone, the orisha-worshipping transvestite, becomes the evangelical pastor Sergio. The video won the artist a two-month stay at New York’s Residency Unlimited under the Artist Residency Prize. The filmmakers Karim Aïnouz and Marcelo Gomes are featured with the “documentary-daydream” Sertão de acrílico azul piscina (2004), a depiction of habits at once primitive and contemporary in several states in Northeast Brazil. For its part, Cinthia Marcelle’s Cruzada video raises issues relating to sociocultural conflicts by resorting to performance, painting, video art, and sound art.

Crossings and passages: the unequal accumulation of time was recently shown at the Goodman Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa. The traveling video programs are one of the strategies designed to keep Associação Cultural Videobrasil’s collection active and in touch with the world, by offering fresh perspectives on its artworks as they relate to contemporary art production.
