Launch of Disturbingly Familiar, by Giselle Beiguelman, to be on April 6

The launch of Perturbadoramente familiar (Disturbingly Familiar) will be on April 6, 2017, Thursday, at 7 p.m.

Nearly one year after the exhibition How Heavy is a Cloud?, curated by Ana Pato, Giselle Beiguelman returns to Galpão VB to launch this book-object, a further exploration of the records of her trip to Poland in 2015. The artist, who is represented by Galeria Mezanino, went to her family’s country in search of a narrative for her trackless story.

The textual and visual diary that resulted from this journey mixes photographs with images from her family’s archive. An account of situations of belonging and cultural exclusion, it combines photos of the trip, material from the family archive, and pages stamped by the artist. The book is centered around the doubts and questions that emerged as the artist crossed Warsaw, Przemyśl and Deblin, the cities her grandparents came from, in addition to Krakow, Auschwitz, and Bendin. The trip was taken by invitation of the program for promotion of the Polish culture in Brazil, organized by Culture.pl.

Perturbadoramente familiar (Disturbingly Familiar) is integrated into a wooden box, containing a set of postcards and a stamp, and secured with a transversal lock, the support of the stamp that is part of the work. The artist produced 20 signed and numbered pieces, each containing different interventions she performed.
