The New Zealand artist discusses his Des Deux Côtes video and his creative process. Fictional elaboration, he says, is never invented from scratch, but rather articulated by rearranging or exaggerating elements from reality. By combining beauty and ugliness, he intends to give shape to the uncanny feeling he had while in this place. By building the narrative around the settings, an old underground pool, he addresses the importance of unexpected meetings to his work, where environments suggest stories. He comments on the Festival’s dynamics, on his own insertion into the Sesc Pompeia facilities, and on the possibility that the event creates for coming into contact with other artists whom, like him, are closely connected with cinema.
