Visual artist. His works straddle video, photography, drawing, installation, sculpture and performance as they inquire about the place the body occupies in the world. Through anagrams and performance actions, the artist ties together images and words, engaging in semantical contortionism. He attempts to cause the body to converge in situations of interaction with its surroundings and conceptual frameworks that suggest that it is relationally defined, all the while operating a retrieval of aspects of Brazilian cultural formation. Carlos Mélo created and organized the 1st Brazilian Mud Biennial, Caruaru (2014). He has been featured in group exhibitions like the 3rd Biennial of Bahia, Salvador (2014); Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois, Champaign, USA (2013); Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art, Recife (2010 and 1999); Itaú Cultural, São Paulo (2008, 2005, 2002 and 1999); and others. Mélo has exhibited solo at Galeria 3+1, Lisbon, Portugal (2010); Paço das Artes, São Paulo (2004); and Fundação Joaquim Nabuco (Recife, Brasil, 2000). He won the CNI SESI Marcantonio Vilaça Visual Arts Prize (2006). Carlos Mélo lives and works in Recife.
