Melati Suryodarmo is an internationally renowned visual artist and performer. She graduated in Performance Arts from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, Germany, where she studied under Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa. Her practice encompasses performance, Butoh dance, video, and photography, exploring the relationship between body, memory, and identity through poetic gestures and rituals. Her works investigate themes such as love, displacement, and failure, incorporating Javanese philosophies and Indonesian histories recontextualized for contemporary discourse. She has participated in the Venice Biennale (2003, 2015), Manifesta 7 (2008), and ArtJog (2020) and exhibited at institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia, Singapore Art Museum, and Akili Museum of Art. She was awarded at the Asia-Pacific Triennial (2018) and Indonesian Art Awards (2009), with solo exhibitions at Museum MACAN (2020) and STPI, Singapore (2019). Holding a PhD from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (2016), she organizes laboratories and events such as Undisclosed Territory and mentors emerging artists. She lives and works between Indonesia and Germany.
