Sitiado [Beseiged] is based on forty-one seconds taken from the film State of Siege [État de siège], by Costa-Gavras (1972), which are repeated over and over to a soundtrack composed of snippets from songs censored during the 1970s and ’80s by the military dictatorships in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. The video is edited as a loop in this version, although the project itself is open-ended and ever-growing, with new additions made as the author’s research into Latin American dictatorships yields more information about banned songs. The work recomposes shared memories of repression and violence and shows the symbolic power of the popular song to rally the masses.
