In his first appearance at the Festival, the Peruvian artist discusses his piece Cuculí, featured in the 2013 Southern Panoramas show. Jacoby talks about his enchantment with the unknown and his quest for alterity, both of which are key drivers of his work. He talks about his stay in Japan, during which he created the piece while undertaking and artist residency. He claims this artwork financing modality must be taken as an opportunity to break away from preset schemes for contact with others offered by the tourism industry. These escape routes for meeting such distinct people take place based on unexpected points of affinity, which are found as a result of the impossibility to establish relationships via simple and direct cultural identification, or a shared language. He expounds on the importance the Far East country has taken on in his career, precisely due to its being distant from his own place of origin.
