The artist Luiz de Abreu comments on O Samba do Crioulo Doido, the performance that won him the grand prize at the 18th Festival (2013). Abreu mentions that O Samba do Crioulo Doido, the outcome of research he has done since 2003, is an autobiographical take on his experience as a black man and a Brazilian. The artist expounds on his intention to stage issues pertaining to black identity without heavy political overtones, and with an aesthetic concern. The performance borrows its title from the song by Stanislaw Ponte Preta, which ended up becoming synonymous with things that make no sense. In this respect, Luiz de Abreu discusses the comical vein in his performance – though not solemn, O Samba do Crioulo Doido does not employ humor to the detriment of the seriousness of the topic it addresses. The recorded performance was selected by curator Agustín Pérez Rubio to be a part of the Unerasable Memories – A Historic Look at the Videobrasil Collection (2014) exhibit.
