Roy Dib, winner of the Vila Sul – Goethe-Institut residency, presents and comments his pieces Mondial 2010 and A Spectacle of Privacy. He talks about how he has collected imagens of Palestinians since 2010, because, being Lebanese, he could never visit Palestine. Therefore, he asked these people to film whatever they wanted to show him when they returned to their country. The artist comments on how Mondial 2010 originated from the idea of building a fictitious story about a couple that goes to Ramallah with scenes captured there. Roy states that the video is a kind of road movie where one does not see the protagonist, a film that deals with the inability to make something happen, about an impossible path. He also talks about how he decided to do otherwise in his following project, A Spectacle of Privacy, in which one sees only protagonists and the interior of a room. According to the artist, this video installation portrays the night the couple allegedly spent at Ramallah. Roy says he started with the analogy between using preservatives and building trust in order to allude to the notion that Israelis are afraid Palestinians and Israelis might understand each other and thus created the wall that separates both countries. Roy also reckons it is the first time he is displaying Mondial 2010 on an external wall, along with Spectacle of Privacy in a closed room, as if we were in the piece’s very own room.
