Köken Ergun, winner of the China Art Foundation residency, presents Bayrak (The Flag), one of his first pieces, which inaugurates his work with rituals. The artist talks about how the piece deals with the celebration of national holidays in Turkey, in which children and youngsters usually take part, carried out in big stadiums. Köken says he made a video installation divided in two channels to highlight two aspects of the ritual: children reading of nationalist poems and the audience’s reaction in the stadium. The artist also talks about how the piece approaches the construction of the nation and the State’s expectation in believing that, the more children repeat these patriotic lines, the more they will love their country in support of national security.
