Through photography and performance, Samuel Fosso creates alternative identities that challenge conventional representational standards and gives autofiction and self-portrait dimensions that are both political and historical, fictional and intimate.
At the Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil, he is showing photographs from the "70s Lifestyle Series" (1974-1978) and the "Fosso Fashion" series (2021), works that illustrate the role of photography in constructing and sustaining myths. The "70s Lifestyle Series" is based on Fosso's initial experimentation with self-portraits when he was still a teenager. The artist went on to stage himself, which inspired "Fosso Fashion", in which he uses sophisticated costumes and backgrounds to embody different characters, playing with different ideas of beauty, power and gender performance in a way that was very advanced for its time.
