EDGARD LEUENROTH ARCHIVE COLLECTION (UNICAMP)

A garage-style LGBTQI+ rag, O Snob was created by the Pernambucan Agildo Guimarães and printed in Rio de Janeiro between 1963 and 1969. Mimeographed on A4 paper, it carried news about a Rio-based gay network that had as many as 350 members at one stage. The network also managed to establish links with similar groups in other Brazilian states. Running to a hundred weekly issues, the journal championed debates on sexual and gender identities, while peddling gossip and members’ news, all illustrated by drawings that recalled the women’s and fashion mags of the day. O Snob also covered theater, cinema, and poetry, and the group’s own theme parties. The selection of covers presented at the exhibition reflects the magazine’s pioneering spirit and its transformations over its nearly six-year run.
