Ficção Científica (Science Fiction) is the third work in the Video de Cinema series, which defamiliarises popular film genres (road movies and horror films came earlier in the series) by recreating their atmosphere out of entirely different video material. Ficção Científica consists of shots of forest rain, a Christmas evening, a hotel interior, and a club dance floor combined with dialogue from Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, translated into Portuguese with deliberate distortions. Visual noise, slow motion, camera shake, measured rhythm, and close-ups that do not immediately identify the location suggest an encounter with the unknown and unknowable, which is a key trope of sci-fi cinema.
