The director and scriptwriter Enio Staub discusses his Contestado, A Guerra Desconhecida (Contestado, the Unknown War), a documentary featured in the 3rd Festival (1985). The film revolves around the conflict that took place from 1912 to 1916, in Paraná and Santa Catarina States, and is often excluded from official history. Staub lists the economic, political and geographical factors that led to the battle between government forces and peasants, workers and natives. The director expounds on how the population took sides and participated in the civil war. Interviewing and featuring actual Contestado War combatants in the video was a challenge, says Staub, who sensed the prejudice surrounding an episode that many believe was a war waged by religious fanatics. Staub recollects on a statement from a sharpshooter and stresses how history keeps repeating itself, in his opinion, until our days. According to the director, the Unerasable Memories – a historic look at the videobrasil collection exhibition, which features Contestado, the Unknown War, allows us to better grasp our own history and learn about other histories, so similar even though they come from such varied places and times.
