The artist Mihai Grecu was born in Romania in 1981, in the harshest years of the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu (1967-1989), a friend and admirer of North Korean dictator Kim Il-sung (1948 – 1994). In this statement to Channel VB, the artist discusses the video The Reflection of Power (2014), selected for the 19th Festival. For more than a year, the artist worked extensively with post production and animation in 2D and 3D to recreate cities and images of North Korea which were flooded by water. Grecu talks about the importance of creating a work open to free interpretation by the public. “This is a very personal work, but I don’t have a specific interpretation to its images. The public can think what they want and see in them their own metaphors. That’s why I like creating mysterious images, which sometimes do not need further explanation, beyond their own”.
