Associação Cultural Videobrasil and Sesc São Paulo are announcing the shortlist of artists selected from the artworks call for entries for the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil: Southern Panoramas, set to run from October to December 2015. Artworks by 53 artists and groups from 22 countries have been selected for the Festival. The committee comprises the curators Bernardo de Souza (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil/lives and works in Rio de Janeiro), Bitu Cassundé (Ceará, Brazil/lives and works in Fortaleza), João Laia (Lisbon, Portugal/lives and works in London) and Júlia Rebouças (Sergipe, Brazil/lives and works in Belo Horizonte), working under the general curatorship of Solange Farkas, the director of Videobrasil. The announcement of artists whose projects for production of artworks will be comissioned by the Festival will soon take place.

This year, the Festival is taking its proposal to the extreme by making Southern Panoramas the core of its entire program, instead of simply its competitive show. The South and its myriad issues – related to diasporas, hybrid identities, migration flows and travels, first-person accounts, memories, isolation, social fabric and insularity – have inspired and guided the Curatorial Committee in selecting artworks and projects, as well as underpinned the curatorial axes of all of the Festival’s exhibitions, public programs, and publications.

Despite the significant geopolitical changes that constantly rearrange the notions of North and South, the need remains to work for an art and culture scene in areas that must invent new forms of circulation and visibility. The Festival’s growing relevance within the global art scene and its recognition as one of the foremost platforms for spreading and fostering art production from the global South are made evident in the broadening of its reach and the higher number of entries received. The 19th Festival has received 3,166 entries (up 62% from the 1,956 entries in the last edition) from artists in 118 countries (up 46% from the 81 countries in the 18th Festival).

During the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, the selected artworks will be shown at the lounge area of Sesc Pompeia (São Paulo) – designed by the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) – to take advantage of the venue’s transparency and permeability, key features of both Bardi’s and Pompeia’s.

Besides the selected artworks’ show, the 19th edition of the Festival will feature exhibitions of the selected projects that will be commissioned by the Festival, plus guest artists and Videobrasil Collection exhibits in various venues throughout the city. As in previous years, the Festival’s program will also include book launches, educational activities and meetings with curators, researchers and artists.
