I think of the importance of the video. How it integrates our cultural environment and our daily life- it is easy to realize that we are surrounded by TV sets. I think of how this revolutionary household appliances, that spreads information and entertainment, was so absorbed by the arts.

Within the field of artistic expression, I think of how the video has changed our way of seeing the arts, incorporating and working with materials of other artistic expressions, transforming them in something new- something never seem before. Maybe what is more impressive in the experimental production and videoart is its possibility to make us see in a different way what we are used to see through the small screen of a TV set, and the fantastic capacity to touch the perception and the metaphorical meaning of the vision. In the 10th edition of Videobrasil - result of years of reflection and recognition we can offer a wide scenario of the video consolidation as a work of art filled with poetry. The works of famous and young artists, full of sensibility, are presented. We are completing 10 years at the end of this century, and that makes us think of the future of our event, considering the uncertainties that make audiovisual dependent on institutions.

Two years ago, we presented – at Sesc Pompeia and for the 1st time - a wide variety of works, videos and installations, setting the vitality of the video in all its possibilities and, especially, receiving a great support to the continuity of the festival.

The SESC de São Paulo definitly asserts the diversity of its cultural actions , bringing to public the historical panorama of the contemporary audivisual poetry. The Associação Cultural Videobrail accomplishes once more its compromise of promoting the meeting of art and technology.

Poetry

The poetry theme guides the festival and the videos of the scheduled exhibitions present several possibilities of handling the poetic aspect. The southern Hemisphere Competitive Exhibition encompasses works performed on this hemisphere in the last two years and specially invited custodians prepare the selections of the Audiovisual Poetry Panoramas , which bring over the videoart production in Germany, Latin America, Spain, United States, France and England. The world’s videopoetry panel could not be completed only due to the absence of Japan – in spite of the efforts endeavored by Fujiko Nakaya, Kenjiro Okasaki and the Video Gallery SCAN- and to the impossibility of Gianni Toti arrival, who is a great videopoetry personality in Europe.

The Contemporary art still presents almost unexplored territories, mainly those frontiers that the technology does not end to reveal. And, as a surprising similarity, the imaginative and artificial character of art, which since always is its enchantment, took the technology with such voracity, that today there is the risk of not being able to discern from where the seduction comes. In the present case, of the 10º Videobrasil and its Festival Internacional de Arte Eletrônica, what one search is to explore the ways to a consequent and true video poetry. If it has already demonstrated its descreptive possibilities, of documentation, utilitarian or commercial, its needed to know how it is capable of generating a poetical language. Not only through the technical resources it has, or the fantastic dialogue with computers, but through what one could, modernly and over the shoulder of Dante, call “the fiction in images, but musically formed.”

As a producer and broadcaster fo culture, in the most ample meaning one could give to it, the SESC São Paulo contributesd and makes it real most manifestations that the popular culture is still not interested in standardizing, neither valorized up to the point of universalizing it. It is the unexplored territory that we mentioned. For this the indispensable cooperation with the Associação Cultural Videobrasil, since 1992, making it possible to the Festival, produced by both organizations, the amplification of it proposes and activities. A clear example of this perspective is in the work of the installations. It makes us happy to know that the answers given, both by national and international artists and the public, are stimulating. That of the artists through the aesthetical research; that of the public through the interest and perception of other formas of intelligence and sensibility.

The tanks in the Peace Square, in Peaking, advanced against the disarmed people; the bird covered by oil suffers in the marge of the Golf and war; the young people go out on the street to ask the impeachment of the President Collor. The myth Orwellian of the totalitarian TV died. Today, it is the powerful instrument of the democracies.

Videobrasil researches and broadcasts the TV new functions. For these very reasons, its 10th edition could not deserve anything but the caring support of the Secretaria Municipal da Cultura, syntonized with History, TV and future.

In 1992 the Aliança Francesa de São Paulo created the Prêmio Futuris with the support of Banco Sogeral and the participation of the INA - Instituto Nacional do Audivisual. That year, the first Prêmio Futuris was given to the work of José Quntino, chosen as the best Brazilian Creation of Computer Arts. Quintino was invited to go to Paris for training in Ex Machina, a french enterprise in a distinguished position in the champ of new images and computer images - the theme of the 9º Festival Internacional Videobrasil. In 1994 it happens the 10º Videobrasil and the second Prêmio Futuris. The theme for this edition is poetry. As in the prior situation, the Brazilian Videoartist may discover the most recent and prestigious international productions. They will meet and show the dynamism of this area, which is growing more important in the audiovisual universe, and will be able to participate in the continental competition, open to the South Hemisphere creators.

This shows clearly the impact of the Festival and the importance of the work developed by its organizers, mainly that of the responsible Solange Farkas. The Aliança Francesa keeps its orientation and aims to facilitate the exchange between the creators and responsible both Brazilian and French. The distinguished position that the last ocupy in the international scenery is proved again with the participation of Jean-Marie Duhard and Yves Louchez, administrator of the INA and coordinator of the Festival Imagina. The INA and the Aliança are together again to choice the winner of the second Premio Futuris/ INA/ Aliança Francesa, which will receive a ponsored trip to Paris for training in the producer Ex Machina.
