Record high submissions reveal diversity and power of Southern scene

The open call for the Southern Panoramas segment of the 18th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil, which closed on October 15, saw an all-time high number of submissions: over 2,000 works from 99 countries, broadening the scope and geopolitical diversity from past editions.

To the Festival’s curator general Solange Farkas, “the profusion and quality of the works now being reviewed by the board are proof of the vigor of our Southern scene.” Unlike in previous years, the board of curators, comprising Eduardo de Jesus, Fernando Oliva and Julia Rebouças, will work to build the conceptual issues that will underlie the show. These conceptual axes will be conceived based on reflections prompted by the shortlisted works.

This year the entry process was made fully online, and was therefore faster and more democratic, allowing for the participation of artists from across the whole southern geopolitical axis of the world. The artists shortlisted from the open call will be announced on February 5.

Southern Panoramas is a competitive show held during the biennial International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil; it provides an overview of artwork representing the current output of the scene which includes Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, Oceania, Middle East, Eastern Europe, and South and Southeast Asia. The festival will have its 18th edition between October and December 2013, marking its 30th anniversary.
