Next Saturday, December 12, a tour guided by Diego Matos, the curator of the show Those born for adventure don’t stray from the path, will be one of the actions marking the 45th anniversary of Paço das Artes

Next Saturday, December 12, at 2:30 pm, a guided tour of the show Those born for adventure don’t stray from the path – Artworks from the Videobrasil Collection will be offered by its curator and Videobrasil’s archive and research coordinator Diego Matos. The event is part of venue Paço das Artes’ 45th anniversary celebrations.

The show is the outcome of a partnership that began in 2001, when Videobrasil Collection pieces were first exhibited at Paço das Artes. “The new encounter between our institutions broadens our discussions from the past forteen years by touching on key issues for Paço das Artes: geopolitical references from an art perspective and the question of archive and memory in contemporary art. Highlighting art production from countries in the global South has also been one of the pillars of our work,” says  Paço das Artes art director and curator Priscila Arantes. To Diego Matos, the exhibit produced by the partnership falls in line with “Videobrasil’s perspective of effectively enabling more democratic access to this collection, with its myriad usage possibilities.”

The show’s title is a quote from artist Lygia Pape’s interview with the intellectual and art critic Mário Pedrosa, and according to the curator, it “renewed belief in the role of the artist and public intellectual, as well as in the inherent art-politics connection” at a time of “crisis, of a trauma that had already crystallized within Brazilian society, and the demise of hopes thwarted by the military regime.”

The show features work dating from 1978 to 2012, created by sixteen artists and groups from global South countries. Artwork by key Brazilian video artists of the likes of  Cao GuimarãesCarlos NaderCristiano LenhardtJoão Moreira SallesKarim Aïnouz and Marcelo Gomes converse with work by Peru’s Gabriel Acevedo, Israel’s  Nurit Sharett (featured in the latest edition of the São Paulo Art Biennial) and Algeria’s Malek Bensmaïl, among others.

The artworks, which have been culled from the Videobrasil Collection, comprising 1,300-plus video pieces, are divided into three sets with shared features: Affections, times and roads; Democracy, document and fiction; and Speech, hearing and dissent.

Those born for adventure don’t stray from the path, a parallel exhibition of the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil held at Sesc Pompeia and Galpão VB, is set to continue until January 10, 2016. Click here for the full PAÇO DAS ARTES 45th anniversary program.
