The Pakistani artist, the winner of a prize at the 18th edition of the Southern Panoramas competitive show, discusses his piece My Father and his own relationship with the Festival. A late-born child, Basir recounts the experience of living at two simultaneous times: his own growing up and his youth, and his parents’ aging and weakening. His elderly father’s need for care and favours, like typing a telephone number of threading a needle, is seen by the artist as a means to expand his own experiences, an opening to new possibilities in experiencing the different pace – slower and gentle – of the life of the other. He explains that despite being short in duration, his video concentrates years of interaction between parents and child. The affection, he believes, allows the individual to build ties with the environment, and the audience to build ties with his work.
