Mapping Subjectivity at MoMA
The MoMA presents the third and last segment of the Mapping Subjectivity program, which had its first segment in 2010 and the second in 2011. The program focuses on experimental Arab film production from the 1960s until our days. The films revolve around transgression, highlighting how Arab artists and filmmakers portray the social change underway in the region, always in a deeply personal fashion.
Alongside landmark filmmakers in Arab cinematography such as Ridha Béhi, Mohamed Aboulouakar, Ahmed Zir, and Ahmed Bennys, the show includes programs dedicated to topics such as sexuality and gender (including the views of several female filmmakers), and politics, highlighting the social movements that have shaken the Arab world since 2011. The cycle includes work from Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia.
The films will be screened at New York’s MoMA until November 25th.
