This week’s program features actions by Chelpa Ferro, Alexandre da Cunha, Cão and Luiz de Abreu

This week, the 18th Festival program is packed with performance actions. Apart from restagings of works by Luiz de Abreu and the Cão collective, two historical performances that have marked the Festival’s trajectory will be presented once again at the Sesc Pompeia Warehouse, as part of the 30 Years show: Reboot, by the collective Chelpa Ferro, and Coverman, by the artist Alexandre da Cunha.

On occasion of the Black Awareness Day, on 11.20 Luiz de Abreu will stage the performance O Samba do Crioulo Doido, winner of the Grand Prize at the Southern Panoramas competitive show. Through dancing, the artist deconstructs race and gender stereotypes concerning the black body in an impactful action (learn more about this and other prize-winning pieces from this edition of the Festival).

The São Paulo-based group Cão, comprising Bruno Palazzo, Dora Longo Bahia, Maurício Ianês and Ricardo Carioba, will present a musical performance for the second time on Friday evening. In a dense, grim atmosphere, against a black-on-black background, Cão creates distorted sounds influenced by industrial rock music, electronic music, and noise. The visual ambience is built with smoke, strobe lighting, and image and video projections.

Reboot, by the multimedia group Chelpa Ferro, is a restaging of O Gabinete de Chico (watch on Channel VB), a musical performance originally shown at the 12th Videobrasil International Electronic Art Festival. Combining traditional musical instruments (like guitar, bass and keyboards) and objects as unusual as knife sharpeners, table football, balloons and door bells, the group uses the sounds produced as inputs to editing and processing images in real time.

In Coverman, Alexandre da Cunha selects one collaborator to undergo a session of movements akin to treatments and interventions, such as massage, bandaging, and autopsy, in a process analogous to first aid manuals. The collaborator-trial subject is constantly photographed during the process, while a video projection details and expands on the procedures employed by the artist. This is a restaging of the namesake performance originally presented in 2001 (watch on Channel VB) during the 13th International Electronic Art Festival Videobrasil.

Following the staging of Coverman, Alexandre da Cunha will join Fernando Oliva at the meeting Performance: action, reissue and recording, in order to discuss the different temporalities that exist in performance, as part of the 18th Festival Public Programs.
