VIDEOBRASIL IN THE MENA - Nurit Sharett
Watch the artist’s statement to VB Channel, commenting on her prize-winning work at the 18th Festival.
The impact of military conflict and State oppression on daily life is also discussed in artwork coming from Israel. Despite their heavy political overtones, Nurit Sharett’s videos are based on accounts of personal experiences – her own and those of other women living in Palestine and Israel. Working mostly with video, the artist addresses issues like national identity, ethnicity, otherness and gender, always from a political standpoint.
In The Sun Glows Over the Mountains, the artist’s childhood and the political philosophy of her grandfather, a former Israeli foreign minister intertwine, tying together the histories of her family and her nation. The piece was shortlisted for the 18th Festival competitive show and won the residency prize at the Red Gate Gallery from the China Art Foundation. In turn, H2 (shortlisted for the 17th Festival competitive show) is a feminine take on the life of women in Hebron, a city in the West Bank controlled by both the Palestinian National Authority and the Israeli government.
Her works have also been shown at the Israeli Center for Digital Art, Holon (2012) and at the House of Israeli Culture in São Paulo (2011). She has won a prize from the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sports; a prize at the Alter-Native 12 International Short Film Festival, in Targu-Mures, Romania; and the "Another look" prize at the EuromedCafe Short Film Contest, in Rome, Italy.
