The launch of the book edited by Fabio Cypriano and Mirtes Marins de Oliveira happens on JUN/25, with talk with and the Spanish curator Pablo Lafuente

June 25 (Saturday) at 3pm will see the launch of the book História das Exposições / Casos exemplares (Exhibition histories / case studies) at Galpão VB. Editors Fabio Cypriano and Mirtes Marins de Oliveira will join the Spanish curator Pablo Lafuente, who gave the book’s opening interview, to discuss the publication with the public. From 2010 to 2015, Lafuente was the editor of Afterall magazine and of the Exhibition Histories book series, which laid down the guidelines for the field of study that  researches the shows’ histories.

The publication features research into said histories that transcends the fetishizing, artwork/artist-oriented analysis to focus instead on the role of institutions in spreading and canonizing these objects/actions and their producers. There’s no such thing as a neutral institution, and each material detail of the exhibitions they house are indications of potential conceptual and ideological biases. Exhibition histories. Case studies brings together a group of researchers who had prior involvement with the subject, with each of them tackling a key issue pertaining to the shows’ histories – from the architectural devices used throughout the 20th century to specific case studies.

Besides the interview with Pablo Lafuente, the book features articles by Ana Maria Maia (Exposição como processo: o legado experimental dos Domingos da Criação e da 6ª JAC - Exhibition as process: the experimental legacy of the Creative Sundays and of the 6th JAC), Cauê Alves (Debates em torno da mostra Projeto Construtivo Brasileiro na Arte - Debates about the exhibition Brazilian Constructive Project in Art), Fabio Cypriano (Como viver junto: a bienal que reconfigurou a instituição - How to live together: the biennial that reconfigured the institution), Fernando Oliva (3ª Bienal da Bahia: refazendo tudo - 3rd Bahia Biennale: redoing everything), Mirtes Marins de Oliveira (Anotações para pesquisa: histórias das exposições e a disseminação do cubo branco como modelo neutro, a partir do Museum of Modern Art, de Nova York - Research annotations: exhibition histories and the dissemination of the white cube as a neutral model, starting from New York’s Museum of Modern Art), Priscila Arantes (O arquivo como dispositivo curatorial - The archive as a curatorial device) and Vinicius Pontes Spricigo (Rumo a uma arqueologia das exposições - Toward an archaeology of exhibitions).

On the same date as the exhibition opening, two new shows will open at Videobrasil’s Galpão VB venue from 12pm to 6pm: Trilogia (Trilogy), by Cinthia Marcelle, curated by Solange Farkas and co-curated by Gabriel Bogossian, and Quanto pesa uma nuvem? (How heavy is a cloud?), by Giselle Beiguelman, curated by Ana Pato. Both shows will continue until August 20, 2016.
