Next edition has been postponed indefinitely

Solange Farkas, director of the Contemporary Art Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil announces the cancellation of the event’s coming edition, initially scheduled to open in October 2021, curated by Raphael Fonseca (Brazil) and Renée Akitelek Mboya (Kenya).

The Biennial would have Brook Andrew (Australia), Kamala Ibrahim Ishag (Sudan), Njideka Akunyili Crosby (Nigeria/USA), Lawrence Abu Hamdan (Lebanon/United Arab Emirates), and Tirzo Martha (Curaçao) as guest artists, and it was preparing to announce the Open Call for artists from the Global South in June. The new dates will be announced according to the developments of the pandemic and the reorganization of the cultural sector.

“The practical and ethical implications associated with the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus, aggravated by the borderline situation of the Brazilian scenario, were crucial for this decision. It is impossible to plan an exhibition of this magnitude in the face of a government that disrespects culture, the press and the democratic institutions on a daily basis,” says the director.

Associação Cultural Videobrasil remains active, making the contents of Canal VB available online, as well as elaborating new projects consistent with the global context.
