Joseph Beuys - A Revolução Somos Nós

The communications project that underlies Joseph Beuys’ seminal work is the background theme to this publication, taking his retrospective show in São Paulo as a starting point. The show featured posters, multiples and videos dating from 1964 to 1986, and was designed to highlight Beuys’ myriad strategies and the importance of the word to his oeuvre. The book, which won the 2011 Jabuti Prize, also reflects on these issues by means of various contributions.

The essays delve into key aspects of Beuys’ career and conceptions. Curator Antonio d’Avossa reviews the context of intense exchange and collaboration in which he produced his multiples and posters; a unique visual testimony from that period is seen in images by the photographer Digne M. Marcovicz. Volker Harlan comments on the theory of botany-based social sculpture that Beuys adopted in his strategies and procedures. And Rainer Rappmann, the creator of the Free International University, discusses the actions that have prolonged the artist’s work beyond his death, in 1986.
