Literatura expandida: arquivo e citação na obra de Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster

Straddling the lines between cinema, video and installation, the French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster is known for the way she concocts atmospheres that evoke the meaning of dystopia. On Expanded literature – archive and quotation in the work of Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Ana Pato explores how the artist takes stock of archival practices, such as quotations and references, to compose a piece that verges on a new form of literature no longer limited by words, but rather multidimensional.

With an essay-like tone, the author manages to make the comprehension of an oeuvre regarded as complex into an accessible, pleasurable experience. Physically speaking, the book also sets out to translate issues that the research sheds light on: highlighting the constitutive character of quotations, the archive, and references in Gonzalez-Foerster’s body of work, the graphic design by Daniel Trench and the editing by Teté Martinho include color-highlighted quotes, a bibliography at the beginning of the book,  a still from the piece Textorama (a mural of quotations) on the cover, and reproductions of pages from another publication (like a book within the book). Part of Ana Pato’s research, a lengthy interview with the artist, and artwork reproductions are included.
