The Women's Choir of Kartal, a village near Budapest in eastern Hungary, presents a potpourri of five songs from their repertoire, whose lyrics were collectively rewritten, based on concerns regarding the end of the communal way of life and the future of the village. To the melodies of local tradition are added stories about current changes in the political system, lifestyle, and the laborious daily life experienced by the different generations of women who make up the choir. The updating of traditional popular songs takes on a form of grassroots “community broadcasting,” amplifying a heterogeneity of voices, while questioning the topics that are given media attention, especially in times of rising clickbait journalism. Made in collaboration with curator Katalin Erdődi and folk singer Réka Annus.
